Naia del Castillo (Bilbao, 1975) combines her artistic practice with teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU.

She has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU in the specialty of sculpture (1998), a master’s degree with honors from Chelsea College of Art & Design in London (2000) and a doctorate Cum Laude from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV/EHU (2021).

Since 2000, her artistic practice has been articulating sculpture, performative action and photography, motivated by examining spaces of transition structured in a reversible way, in which the agents -body, image, and representation- continuously replace their roles. She seeks to create tensions between the shared representational spaces and the differential of the encounter. In her last individual exhibition, she abandons this reversible structure to work on a new group of more experimental and intuitive, which intervene from physiological and neurological reactions.

Her works are presented in projects such as: Atrapados (2000-02), Sobre la seducción (2002-04), Ofrendas y posesiones (2004-06), Desplazamientos (2010-12), Flujos (2015), El lugar de las imágenes (2019), Anestesia (2023) or the multidisciplinary works: Com voldria ser (2007), Matryoshka (2009) El ejercicio como herramienta (2019). She has worked on commission for the Prado Museum (Doce artistas en el Museo del Prado, 2007) and Loewe (Take Me with You, collective, Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2006), among others.

She was selected in Gure Artea 2000, First Prize in Ertibil (2003), Prize for Best Exhibition in the Festival OFF de PHE 2005 and selected to represent Spain in Parisphoto05, among other awards.

Del Castillo has worked in different artistic residences in Bilbao, Rotterdam, London, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, New York, Hong Kong, or Madrid, such as: Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2004), Royal Academy of Spain in Rome (2007), ISCP - International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York (2009), or Académie de France in Madrid - Casa de Velázquez (2015).
