Naia del Castillo (Bilbao, 1975) combines her artistic practice with teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU.
She has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU in the specialty of sculpture (1998), a master’s degree with honors from Chelsea College of Art & Design in London (2000) and a doctorate Cum Laude from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV/EHU (2021).
Since 2000, her artistic practice has been articulating sculpture, performative action and photography, motivated by examining spaces of transition structured in a reversible way, in which the agents -body, image, and representation- continuously replace their roles. She seeks to create tensions between the shared representational spaces and the differential of the encounter. In her last individual exhibition, she abandons this reversible structure to work on a new group of more experimental and intuitive, which intervene from physiological and neurological reactions.
Her works are presented in projects such as: Atrapados (2000-02), Sobre la seducción (2002-04), Ofrendas y posesiones (2004-06), Desplazamientos (2010-12), Flujos (2015), El lugar de las imágenes (2019), Anestesia (2023) or the multidisciplinary works: Com voldria ser (2007), Matryoshka (2009) El ejercicio como herramienta (2019). She has worked on commission for the Prado Museum (Doce artistas en el Museo del Prado, 2007) and Loewe (Take Me with You, collective, Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2006), among others.
She was selected in Gure Artea 2000, First Prize in Ertibil (2003), Prize for Best Exhibition in the Festival OFF de PHE 2005 and selected to represent Spain in Parisphoto05, among other awards.
Del Castillo has worked in different artistic residences in Bilbao, Rotterdam, London, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, New York, Hong Kong, or Madrid, such as: Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2004), Royal Academy of Spain in Rome (2007), ISCP - International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York (2009), or Académie de France in Madrid - Casa de Velázquez (2015). She has done so thanks to various scholarships and awards. Among them we mention: Generation 2000 Scholarship, Biscay Provincial Council Production Scholarship, Injuve Scholarship, Etxepare Basque Institute Art Promotion Scholarship or Art and Law Foundation Scholarship.
Del Castillo has exhibited in internationally recognized galleries, art centers and museums. Naia del Castillo (Bilbao, 1975) compagina su práctica artística con la docencia en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad del País Vasco UPV/EHU.
Es licenciada en Bellas Artes por la Universidad del País Vasco UPV/EHU en la especialidad de escultura (1998), Master con honores por Chelsea College of Art & Design en Londres (2000) y doctora Cum Laude por la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la UPV/EHU (2021).
Desde el año 2000 su práctica ha ido articulando escultura, acción performativa y fotografía, motivada por examinar espacios de transición estructurados de manera reversible, en la que los agentes -cuerpo, imagen, representación- reemplazan continuamente sus roles, creando tensiones entre los espacios representacionales compartidos y lo diferencial del encuentro. En su última exposición individual abandona esta estructura reversible para trabajar en un nuevo grupo de obras más experimentales e intuitivas, que intervienen desde reacciones fisiológicas y neurológicas.
Sus trabajos se presentan en proyectos como: Atrapados (2000-02), Sobre la seducción (2002-04), Ofrendas y posesiones (2004-06), Desplazamientos (2010-12), Flujos (2015), El lugar de las imágenes (2019), Anestesia (2023) o las obras multidisciplinares Com voldria ser (2007), Matryoshka (2009) El ejercicio como herramienta (2019). Ha trabajado por encargo para el Museo del Prado (Doce artistas en el Museo del Prado, 2007) y Loewe (Take Me with You, colectiva, Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, y Mori Art Museum, Tokio, 2006), entre otros.
Fue seleccionada en Gure artea 2000, Primer Premio en Ertibil (2003), Premio a la Mejor Exposición en el Festival OFF de PHE 2005 y seleccionada para representar a España en Parisphoto05, entre otros premios.
Del Castillo ha trabajado en diferentes residencias artísticas en Bilbao, Rotterdam, Londres, Barcelona, París, Roma, Nueva York, Hong Kong o Madrid, como son por ejemplo: Cité Internationale des Arts en París (2004), Real Academia de España en Roma (2007), ISCP - Internacional Studio and Curatorial Program en Nueva York (2009), o Académie de France à Madrid - Casa de Velázquez (2015). Lo ha hecho gracias a diversas becas y premios. Entre ellas mencionamos: Beca Generación 2000, Beca de Producción de la Diputación Foral de Bizkaia, Beca Injuve, Beca de Promoción de Arte del Instituto Vasco Etxepare o Beca Fundación Arte y Derecho.
Del Castillo ha expuesto en galerías, centros de arte y museos reconocidos internacionalmente.
